Tributes pour in for MLB legend Pete Rose after baseball's all-time hits leader passes away at age 83

In the wake of the death of all-time baseball great Pete Rose, tributes to one of the sport's most decorated and complicated players have begun pouring in.

Rose passed away in the early evening on Monday at the age of 83 at his home in Las Vegas. His cause of death is unknown.

Rose is known for many things. His 4,256 hits is the most of any player in the history of Major League Baseball and he was a cult hero in his home town of Cincinnati, the city where he played a majority of his career and where he managed for six seasons.

At the same time, his legacy is complicated by his actions off the field that - among other things - saw him receive a lifetime ban from the sport and get branded 'permanently ineligible' from the Baseball Hall of Fame.

While debate rages on about whether he deserved reinstatement or not, fans of the sport took the time to offer their thoughts and condolences at the loss of a sporting icon.

The Cincinnati Reds, the team that Rose was best known for in his playing days, changed their profile photo on Twitter to a black No. 14 and posted that they were 'heartbroken' to learn of the passing of arguably the greatest player in the franchise's history.

Barry Larkin, a former teammate and player for Rose on the Reds, tweeted, 'RIP Hit King Pete Rose'.

Former MLB slugger and two-time World Series winner Jose Canseco tweeted, 'RIP Pete Rose. Another player than [sic] should be in the HOF.'

Canadian sportswriter Hayley McGoldrick posted, 'just called my dad about pete rose passing like it was a family member, i think my dad loved that man more than he loves me.'

Supposedly, the league offices have sophisticated analytical and detective operations that monitor for blips in the betting line, keep current with law enforcement chatter, and watch out for player, coach, and referee misbehavior. My guess though is that they excuse or cover up much more than anyone will publicly admit to.

I’ve got an old comic book with two celebrity endorsements. One is from Pete Rose, the other is OJ Simpson.

To quote Bill James, athletes are heroes, that is their job.
