‘One pistol clip can change the balance of power’: Congress is wholly unprepared for a mass casualty event
Politico ^

Posted on 09/25/2024 4:45:48 AM PDT by Tench_Coxe

Over the past 15 years, members of Congress have survived two near-deadly shootings, a train crash with dozens of them on board, and a Capitol riot that had hundreds of lawmakers fearing for their lives.

Despite those incidents, the institution is wholly unprepared for a catastrophic event that kills or incapacitates multiple members — even if that hypothetical tragedy results in a major power shift: changing which party holds the majority in the House or Senate.

(snip)

Right now, the main idea to address the issue is a constitutional amendment that would require members of the House to submit a list of at least five possible successors to be tapped in the event of their death. If any member dies in office, the state’s governor would select an individual from the list to serve on a temporary basis until officials hold a special election for a permanent replacement.

(snip)

Opportunities to address the issue — known in congressional parlance as “continuity of government” — have come and gone over the past quarter century.

Since this is in Politico, it causes one to wonder, “Exactly what do the forces of evil (the left/Deep State) have planned?”. Remember, there’s no lie they won’t tell or law they won’t break to further their agenda.

Why not just make it hereditary?

And one pistol “clip” could change the balance of power? That’sa dog whistle if I’ve ever heard one.

The main activity of Congress is to spend money.

Congress needs to get its budget process in order.

Take a look at Article I, Section 8.

The only urgent thing is declaring war. States can train draftees. Ships aren’t built in a month.

If Putin sends nuclear warheads towards the USA at 3AM EST, Joe Biden isn’t going to wait until the members of Congress are woken, dressed and driven to the Capitol.

Congress only needs majorities. If three representatives survive, two will carry a bill.

And why should Joe’s beloved democracy be bypassed? States can post the five names on a ballot by state law and people can vote starting 7am thereafter.

WTF is a pistol clip?

The words of a collectivist idiot with no comprehension of firearms who is trying to manipulate the governed.

“I sure can see one of today’s radical “progressives” trying to take out a GOP House member for the sole purpose of tipping the balance of power in the House.”

Gov. Hochul will give the list of five Republicans the most careful and time-consuming consideration possible. Senator Schumer has pledged to work 12 hours a day getting bills written and passed in the Senate.

“...and a Capitol riot that had hundreds of lawmakers fearing for their lives.”

Stopped reading right there.

We need to at least double the number of HOR Congress-critters.

Chevron Deference, like the Wicked Witch of the West is now dead. Huge numbers of administrative regulations are going to collapse like houses of cards and will need to begin being replaced to some extent (because nature abhors a vacuum) by statutory schemes of appropriate scale and complexity, devised by elected legislatures with actual substantive knowledge in all of these various fields.

Also Regular Order is about to be restored in the budgeting process so committee work will become hard and (appropriately) burdensome.

So, once again, we need many, many more Congress-critters in the House.

Who can all be voted out in less than two years if they prove to be crooks or satanists or Alinskyites or jihadists or inveterate liars or Kamalommunists, etc.

Good point. Such an amendment would have to include a time limit. If a governor has not appointed a replacement in, say, three days the first person on the list automatically gets the job.

And of course the list is drawn up by the House member, who must choose carefully - and make sure each person is constitutionally eligible.

That’s right, and don’t you forget it, government Goliath.

And “We The People” — never, ever, ever, EVER surrender your weapons. Ever.

“Where the people fear the government you have tyranny. Where the government fears the people you have liberty.”

!!!

A stripper clip is the only thing I can think of.

C96 (Broom Handle) Mausers and perhaps a few other "deadly weapons of war" come to mind.
