‘One pistol clip can change the balance of power’: Congress is wholly unprepared for a mass casualty event
Politico ^

Posted on 09/25/2024 4:45:48 AM PDT by Tench_Coxe

Over the past 15 years, members of Congress have survived two near-deadly shootings, a train crash with dozens of them on board, and a Capitol riot that had hundreds of lawmakers fearing for their lives.

Despite those incidents, the institution is wholly unprepared for a catastrophic event that kills or incapacitates multiple members — even if that hypothetical tragedy results in a major power shift: changing which party holds the majority in the House or Senate.

(snip)

Right now, the main idea to address the issue is a constitutional amendment that would require members of the House to submit a list of at least five possible successors to be tapped in the event of their death. If any member dies in office, the state’s governor would select an individual from the list to serve on a temporary basis until officials hold a special election for a permanent replacement.

(snip)

Opportunities to address the issue — known in congressional parlance as “continuity of government” — have come and gone over the past quarter century.

Ah yes, the magic phrase 'continuity of government'.

I'm going to play the cynic here and say it was so much easier when kings could appoint their successors and not have to defer to their lessors.

And while I'm sure some may be guided by good intentions, just a reminder the road to hell is paved with those.

Shouldn’t the Members’ constituents have some say in these “successors”?

Congress is a bevy of corrupt cowards doing the bidding for their own interests.

I feel nothing thinking about those selfish bastards.

“he institution is wholly unprepared for a catastrophic event that kills or incapacitates multiple members”

All BS. Continuity of government plans are in place and have been for decades. There are 535 of those scoundrels, so losing even two dozen wouldn’t make a dent in things.

It’s the thing on your pistol that allows you to hang your gun off your belt, you know like a impact gun 😎

WTF is a pistol clip?

That is what is called a big clue. The big clue that everything that follows is idiocy.

~~~
All pre-planned by empress palpatine-pelosi.
If your own speaker of the house wants to use representatives as political cannon fodder, then you’ll never have real security.
Oh, and what ever happened to the Pakistani IT hackers who were moles inside of congress?
Boy they really swept that whole thing under the rug. My suspicion was it was an inside job, probably democrats who made a deal to compromise IT to people who would share secrets and intel with them.
No doubt setting a stage. They always telegraph their intentions and this says they intend to kill as many congress critters are possible and claim that means they take extraordinary powers. If they kill republicans in the House then they will claim a majority and take over.
That’s actually a good idea. For the times they are a-changing. I sure can see one of today’s radical “progressives” trying to take out a GOP House member for the sole purpose of tipping the balance of power in the House.
“... a list of at least five possible successors”
Why five? What if they’re not all of the same political party? What if the ones who are not chosen, sue?
Stupid.
