I would assume that they can be given O Negative blood, the universal donor? Correct me if I am wrong.

I would not assume that. It sounds like a person with the MAL protein would register as being type A/B/O/AB, but because of the lack of the Anwj protein, a secondary reaction could cause problems or even be fatal. I didn’t realize there was this added layer of complexity to the diversity of human blood.

There are over 800 antigens on the red cell surface, the so called universal donor (O Negative) only represents about 5 of them. So, no simply giving O Neg blood in this (and very many other cases) won’t work.
