A large-scale Ukrainian drone attack on Russia triggered an earthquake-sized blast at a major arsenal in the Tver region on Wednesday, forcing the evacuation of a nearby town, war bloggers and some media reported.
Unverified video and images on social media showed a huge ball of flame blasting high into the night sky and multiple detonations thundering across a lake about 380 km (240 miles) west of Moscow.
NASA satellites picked up intense heat sources emanating from an area of about 14 square kilometres (5 square miles) at the site in the early hours and earthquake monitoring stations picked up what sensors thought was a small earthquake, opens new tab in the area.

“A partial evacuation has been ordered in Toropets, a town of 11,000 to the northwest of Moscow, where “fragments” of a downed Ukrainian drone started a fire, Tver Region Governor Igor Rudenya said in the early hours of Wednesday.
Local air defenses were activated to intercept an enemy UAV, Rudenya said, adding that emergency services are responding to the blaze caused by “falling drone fragments.”
The governor has ordered “partial evacuation of residents from the territory where the air defenses are active and responders are working to contain the fire,” according to a statement from his office. There are no reports of casualties. “

I should clarify the video is not of falling fragments but of the nuisance “fires” caused by the “fragments” of successfully intercepted” drones. On Reddit you can see the video of the official who said that the air defense “worked”..

“Earthquake size blast”? Literally, no, not at all. But an explosion large enough to shake buildings, yes that’s possible.
I have experience those in a war zone, just like many here on FR have. One such “explosion” was when a Navy 8” gun let loose about a half mile from my position. It fired over our heads. Talk about a surprise that scares the holy hell our of a person that also makes things around you vibrate.
Those wishing the Ukraine war will turn out to be WWIII will be seeing plenty of this if your dreams come true.

There was an estimated 30 kilotons of munitions stored at Toropets. For comparison, the Hiroshima yield was an estimated 16 kilotons of TNT. Of course, at Toropets not all of the explosions occurred at a single moment, but involved secondary and tertiary explosions over many hours. On one hand, the 30 kilotons figure might include bomb and missile components along with the explosive components (and maybe not all stockpiles were lost). On the other hand, modern explosives may have a higher yield than TNT.

The view out of the destroyed window indicates how far away the blast front was felt.
