That was a serious blow to the head. I hope she recovers. It's hard to always be 100% aware of your surroundings, but when you are outside, in public, please try to always be on the lookout.
I’ve told this story here before, but when I was a police officer in a medium-size college town in Texas, I was hyper-aware as I was trained. I was at a convenience store parking lot in plain clothes once and was approached by a couple of black men. I recoiled back instinctively putting my gun side away from them. They acted indignant that I was so suspicious of them, but I explained that it’s my police training and identified myself. I’m sure if they weren’t made aware of my LEO status that it could have gone south really quick.
Today, I’m often approached by mostly black people at gas pumps, usually looking for a handout or for some gas. I never donate and let them know, even though they always have a sob story behind their request. One time I even told them to ask Obama for some money.
