Depends on the situation. In the dark, racking it reveals your position to an armed intruder. Not a good idea.

What’s all this talk of racking the shotgun about? My first shot requires no racking. When I’ve already shot the intruder, I don’t think racking it to load the next shell adds much fear at that point.

Why not have a round in the chamber? Real life is not like the movies where peeps carry a gun for half the show then rack the slide to indicate how serious they are!!!

The chances on an armed intruder in my area is nil. In fact, home invasions of occupied homes in my area hasn’t happened in years.

Most of these discussions are academic.
