Average attendance to the home games of the old (1899) Cleveland Spiders was 75 people, compared to 11,389 for the 1962 New York Mets, compared to 16,840 (so far) for the 2024 Chicago White Sox.
So, yeah, people WILL pay to watch train wrecks.

I think there is a decent sized group of MLB fans who are not necessarily hard core team fanatics that live and die with every win and loss, but people who are just looking for a nice summer night out at the ballpark with family or friends, enjoying the food, drinks, atmosphere, and things like fireworks night or bobblehead night. Winning is just a bonus.

Isa that paid attendance, or actual people in seats? I thought MLB went to reporting the paid attendance years ago, because of some really low people-in-the-seats numbers is various cities. There could be a number of season ticket holders (payers) that have not shown up for games. I don't think there are refunds for season tickets if you don't use them.
But at least the Sox get a shiny new stadium every 20 years or so, Mostly paid for with taxpayer dollars.
