Okay. He is a jackass. Pure and simple. I like the Hodge Twins. They are right. He escalated everything.
When you get pulled over, no matter what race, color, or creed you are, you should act the same.
As soon as you are stopped, roll down your window.
Then, retrieve your license and registration and have it ready.
Keep your hands at the 10-2 positions on the wheel.
When the LEO addresses you, answer the questions.
This isn’t knuckling under to police oppression. You are acknowledging that they are there to enforce the law, and that your adherence to the law in their eyes is possibly in violation.
We get the same people all the time who are going to reflexively side with the LEOs. And we get the same people all the time who reflexively side with the person regardless.
I don’t know anything about this case other than that he is a famous athlete. And watching that body cam footage, I don’t know what the speed limit was, but the jerk was going a lot faster than the ambient traffic flow when he went by.
And then I watched the ending after writing this, and he is saying he didn’t do anything wrong. Just wow. If that had been you or me, we wouldn’t have walked away from that. We would have been in the back of a cruiser, our car towed.
What a jackass.
Cop reaction, if the guy was 50 mph over the speed-limit...simply get the guy out of the car...call the tow-guys...confiscate the car until a judge can settle this, and take the guy’s license for six months. I’d impound the car for six months. You don’t even need to handcuff the guy or lay him on the ground. This should be a simple scripted episode.
I didn’t watch the video but I will take some exception to your comments.
Under the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, you have an absolute right to be secure in your person, property and papers. That means that absent suspicion of an articulable crime, a cop cannot just approach you and demand proof of identity or ask what you are doing or where you are going.
I was pulled over a few weeks ago for an expired license plate. I had noticed the day before that it had been expired for almost a year. (Fleet car. Fleet company screwed up and never sent it)
The Trooper came to my window, identified himself and told me that he was recording me. I said “That’s fine. So am I”
He laughed. He then told me why he pulled me over, checked my records and sent me on my way.
Many police get on their power trip I MUST BE OBEYED. No. They MUST be directly disobeyed if they are abridging your Constitutional rights.
Most of them have no Constitutional knowledge at all. I learned that directly from a Constitutional Sheriff.
Always record every interaction with Police. Most will be good as in my story above. Trust but verify.
