I’m not so sure of that.
Back in my Air Force days, I heard people say that if the balloon went up, they hoped to be the first to die in a nuclear fireball. Hogwash. The will to survive is much, much stronger than anyone realizes.
Granted, we Americans are a much more pacific people than we used to be. The customary punch in the mouth is rarely invoked anymore when our womenfolk are insulted, for good or ill. Perhaps we’re cowed by fear of the angry law or maybe our parents just did too good a job of raising lovers and not fighters.
But if the bad guys are coming down my street, I doubt I’ll be the only one with a deer rifle in hand.
