It's been 43 years since I left Germany, after a 4+ year tour there. Traben-Trarbach remains my "second home", so many great memories.
They're stronger than ever, as I reflect on the 1980 election. My neighbors pleaded with me to vote for Carter, they were sure that Reagan would start WWIII. My main argument was that the world is a safer place when America is strong. That remains true to this day.
LOL, my daughter knows it will be time to put me away, when I speak too often of the Summer of 79. I was the XO of a 40 man admin/log unit at the German AA range at Todendorf. We were the only Americans for 200 miles. No disciplinary problems, thanks to a nearby tourist town that came to life during the summer, with the greatest concentration of newly divorced women I've ever encountered. They fell in love with my soldiers, who reciprocated the affection.
