Been gone 5 years now, but still have dreams in Japanese, almost daily (kanji included, lol), and wake up depressed I am not still there. It's been 43 years since I left Germany, after a 4+ year tour there. Traben-Trarbach remains my "second home", so many great memories.
They're stronger than ever, as I reflect on the 1980 election. My neighbors pleaded with me to vote for Carter, they were sure that Reagan would start WWIII. My main argument was that the world is a safer place when America is strong. That remains true to this day.
LOL, my daughter knows it will be time to put me away, when I speak too often of the Summer of 79. I was the XO of a 40 man admin/log unit at the German AA range at Todendorf. We were the only Americans for 200 miles. No disciplinary problems, thanks to a nearby tourist town that came to life during the summer, with the greatest concentration of newly divorced women I've ever encountered. They fell in love with my soldiers, who reciprocated the affection.

OH!!!
1 more thing.. (besides the different dialect), you definitely MUST go to Kyoto.
Beautiful place, and the men (and women) actually have balls 😁
(Unlike Kanto, the will actually express their true feelings (and back it up!)).

I remember '79 well.. cried because my dad (SEAL) said he was being called back into duty, and he was involved with sending Iran broken helicopter engines to slow the process..(another long story)
Yeah, exactly.. at the time, I lived almost half my life there, and I still feel it is more home than here (especially "here"..(Hawaii)..
I was raised on a ranch in Texas, and learned history before most of the communists rewrote the books.. and the rest BEFORE all this revision crap.. (no idea what they are teaching now..)..

Oh.. question: Do you still have dreams in German?
I remember some (military) shrink telling me that we don’t dream in color, nor with characters (including alpha-numeric)..
BULL-SH!T.. My dreams have both color AND hiragana/kanji.. I see/hear/smell being there, almost daily.. at least once a week...

I meant, look up in the urban dictionary the word 'ehem'.
Urban Dictionary: Ehem
Ehem (estrogen + mayhem) is a portmanteau word for expressing the needless or willful damage or violence by all women. Examples of ehem include feminism, alimony, abortion, and 19th amendment.
Ehem is incurable and only metastasizes over time.
1. How is work? It's total ehem.
2. How is traffic? It’s total ehem.
3. How was Karen’s birthday party? It was total ehem.
4. How is Karen’s driving. It is total ehem.
5. Why are the kids down the street screwed up? They’re being terrorized by ehem.
6. Ehem causes monster taxes.
7. Ehem causes wars.
8. Ehem causes divorces.
9. Mother Nature is total ehem running amok.
10. Why is my girlfriend insane? It’s called ehem.

Yes, I still have dreams in German. I’ve lost at least 90% of my language skills, but I continue to use phrases that are embedded in my brain. They’re in color, too.

...when Elvis died... I remember when that happened (think it was 1978?) '77. I was on my honeymoon. We stayed the night in Memphis and heard the news on the way out of town the next morning.

4H is operated by the USDA and land grant universities. Very woke these days. AFAIK, they operate in all 50 states.

Damn.. in Memphis, that IS something to remember, and pass on (Honeymoon, and all)..
Can't think of a positive thing to describe my honeymoon (negative, but not the same as yours)..
Went to Saipan, right after 9/11;
Going back to Japan (after 5 days there), I was the only one that was strip searched, dog sniffed, some bomb detecting high tech crap, in the line... I was also the only "anglo" guy going back to Japan.
All, but me, were darker skin (some much darker skin) getting on the jet.
At least 60% were Muzzies..
That was my honeymoon.. (learned a lot of history about the Pacific battles during WWII though)..

It is a MAJOR shame even 4H went woke.
I was speaking with a ranch owner here, and he has never heard of 4 H.. and actually is willing to start it here to try to bring self sufficient back (Hawaii).
(BTW, most don't know (including myself), but ranching was brought here by the Portuguese a LONG time ago (including horse saddles).
Most ranchers here are very conservative, but never vote or get involved in politics.

He is right next to being a millionaire..
He told me he want to bring 4H to Hawaii... BUT, if it is woke now, not sure I would want it here.. (BTW, he is young enough to be my own son..)
He wants to bring the "old style" back (he was raised by his grandfather (his father was green beret during Desert Storm (same age as me.. I may have bumped into him, but wouldn't know.. his father disappeared).. His mother was an addict, hence, his grandfather raising him (and he was old style.. work to survive type (including LOTS of weapons 😉)..
GF passed away, and left it all to him.
He called me almost weekly to ask for advice (first thing I told him when his GF passed away.. get a Lawyer, your family and friends will be after the estate and money).
Within a week, he thanked me because that is exactly what happened.
That was about 4 years ago...
He still calls me at least once a month..

Thanks, I know, I was just sharing a funny word a friend of mine created and entered into the Urban Dictionary to cover the wonderful world of feminism.

I too have trouble remembering words in Japanese now (in dreams, they are easy.. flow very well)..
In real life, forgetting them quickly :/
(have been trying to find a person here to speak in Japanese with (a few here are 2nd/3rd gen Japanese, but none can speak it fluently. Most I can do here is greets (morning/afternoon/evening/night...).. That's pretty much all they know.
The only local that can actually speak Japanese, is the USPS.. and he retired about a year ago 🫤
It can be a PITA trying to speak when I can't remember 100% US English and locals not understanding Japanese (would rather die than to speak Brit.. lol)..

I see Hawaii 4H still has Shooting Sports, and a high percent of military kids. Livestock, gardening, cooking, and farming shows are still the main activities in actual ag areas.

"feminism"
The destruction of a Republic.
"Democracy:
A word that even conservatives don't seem to understand, and still call a Republic a "Democracy", which backs the communists that are taking over our Republic (and have been doing, very slowly for about 80 years.. Billery made it obvious, but our side was ignorant. Obunghole made it obvious, but our side claimed it would pass. Bidet stamped it on our heads, but out elected(?) officials on our side said, "we will take care of it", with their strongly worded public letters.......).
What do we have left?!
True apologies, didn't mean for this thread to turn political.

"origins of rock n roll"
Oh.. 1 more thing.. 1 of my pet peeves is that many (most) people confuse rock with "rock n roll"..
I believe "rock n roll" ended around, or before 1957.
