The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an usual warning for Californians in late-August... snow is in the forecast! An unseasonable cold front is expected to move through the Sierra on Friday, August 23rd, 2024. According to records, it's the first time snow has been forecasted in California in August in over 20 years.
The NWS office in Sacramento, California is predicting an "uncommon" storm track for this time of year that is expected to bring widespread rain, hail, and gusty winds for all elevations below the snow line.
Snow is expected to fall between 7,500 feet and 9,000 feet of elevation from Thursday night through Friday night with an emphasis on peaks north of I-80, but accumulations will occur further south. The NWS office in Hanford, California published the map below to show the probability of snow accumulation greater than .1 inches in the Eastern Sierra region. Looks like Mammoth Mountain might pick up a dusting!

It’s Glenda, the good witch of the east, trying to wake up all the stoners.
I am in Tahoe now. Sunny and cool. It was hotter in MA today.
Come to ‘AleWorx’ at the 50/89 intersection near Big 5 sports store on Friday afternoon. We’ll be playing some tunes. Wide variety. IF you have a chance that is. 5:30-9:30. I’ll be the old guy.
And has anyone noticed that the hurricane season has been unusually quiescent?
And what happened to the the two dozen killer hurricanes per year that the
warm-mongers have been promising us?
Close to record lows here in Ohio. Lows in the upper 40s is cold for August.
It may be the first time in 20 years that it has been "forecasted," but I've seen it snow at the higher elevations more than twice in July and August in the last 20 years here in the Eastern Sierra.
We sure blew it. Way too many windmills, solar panels, and EVs. Who expected such a dramatic improvement so fast?
Yeah but its still got time for another 30 or so named storms.....
Yup!
I live on Mt. San Jacinto above Palm Springs and have seen it snow on this mountain in every month since moving here in 1989.
“Because of climate change, the summers are hotter than ever now!”
“Well actually, there’s record lows in all different parts of the country”
“Record lows? That’s proof of climate change.... it causes all sorts of strange weather!”
Green Acres, Season 5, Episode 4 “Tale of a Tail.”
Oliver, Lisa and Eb travel to Chicago with Arnold the pig to prove that he is the rightful heir to a $20,000,000 Birnbach pork estate.
As an heir, Arnold is supposed to be able to predict the weather with his tail. When people realize who Arnold is, he gets the royal treatment. Meanwhile, the Douglas’s get a room the size of a closet. Later, they go to Mr. Gerber’s (Roland Winters) office to claim the money.
Mr. Gerber would like to see Arnold’s weather predicting capability. Arnold’s tail makes the ridiculous prediction of snow in July. Suddenly, all the royal treatment disappears. But later, a blizzard hits Chicago.
Too funny.
Coldest in 25 years.
Memphis Tennessee.
August snowstorms are a known effect of global warming.
So are continental drift and killer asteroids.
I remember that episode. Hilarious.
I miss living there. Born and raised in South Lake. Not far from the ‘Y’
Iโm down south in Lake Arrowhead and the highs are supposed to be in the 60s. Thankfully not as cold as you!
