I hear people say that, but I can’t believe it. The only conservative senators ever elected were elected by voters. If they were picked by state legislatures, we never get more than a moderate.

“The only conservative senators ever elected were elected by voters.”

1. Do you have a source for that or is it only opinion?

2. How many current senators would you consider to be conservative?

“If they were picked by state legislatures, we never get more than a moderate.”

I agree that the senators would reflect the state legislature. There are states with conservative legislatures. Alabama comes to mind. There are others.

The current composition of the U.S. senate is:

49 Republicans

48 Democrats

3 Independents (who caucus with the Democrats).

So Democrats control the senate 51/49.

Full party control of U.S. state legislatures:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_state_legislatures

Republican: 28

Democrat: 20

Split: 3

That means that Republicans would control the U.S. senate with 59 senators.
