John Madden was an entertainer. Definitely knew the game but all he could say was “and then boom!” Got bored with his schtick but it worked for a long time. When he said an average linebacker named Milt McColl ‘kinda reminded me of Ted Hendricks I knew he was full of it. You see Milt McColl was an average linebacker at best. The only comparison was their height, around 6 foot six. Hendricks was a hall of fame player.

Conclusion: You can go far with a Forrest Gump naïveté/attitude. At least it wasn’t negative like mine. Sorry.

I think you misinterpreted him. He meant they look alike. Milt McColl looks remarkably similar to Ted Hendricks.

Milt McColl was not a starter, but the guy had that dawg in him. He had his best game in the Super Bowl. He had a 22-Yard interception return off of the great Ken Anderson. And right before halftime, he recovered a fumble on a kick return at the Cincinnati 4-yard line, which led to a score. So even as a rookie backup, he had a big impact on the game.

also, the guy is pretty smart. He was going to medical school while he was playing for the 49ers and he graduated from medical school Right after he retired from the 49ers. And it was Stanford medical School, a top-tier one. And a few years ago his medical device company was funded by top venture capitalist. Oh, and he looked a lot like Ted Hendricks.

No offense, but I'll take his lifetime of football experience and his assessment of players, past and present, over yours anytime......

But we all have our opinions, don't we?

Madden played college ball with some accolades. Decently smart also. Drafted by NFL as a player, got too many injuries and went into coaching.
He had a players view of the game. Just about every player used the term “boom”. That would be a block of tackle which instantly stopped the opponent and usually almost instantly knocked them down. Everyone playing loved doing that to their opponent.
He was an earthy big friendly guy.Terms like “snot bubbler” would let non fb players know about the toughness of the game. Yeah, his style got old...but he was an original...

John Madden was an entertainer.

He was also a very successful head coach. I remember him having a lot of useful things to say about defensive alignments with his on screen chalk talk diagramming.

Yeah, he had a schtick. But he was always being John Madden, and there was a lot of football knowledge included in the package. So he exaggerated the ability of a linebacker. It happens. Men who get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the best pick in the draft sometimes end of with Mitch Trubisky.
