Peter Marshall, the actor and singer turned game show host who played straight man to the stars for 16 years on “The Hollywood Squares,” has died. He was 98.
He died Thursday of kidney failure at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll said.
Marshall helped define the form of the smooth, professional, but never-too-serious modern game show host on more than 5,000 episodes of the series that ran on NBC from 1966 to 1981.

Yeah. But I was already thinking of Gene Rayburn.

Maybe because because James Arness and Peter Graves were brothers.

Jim Lange was a great host of the Dating Game considering what he had to work with. My problem with not recognizing him here was that it didn't seem like a game show as such.

Jamie Farr is more known for M*A*S*H, but you are right about Fannie Flagg. I hadn't even known she was an authoress until many years later.

Buzzr showed some old Price Is Right episodes. I hadn’t known Bill Cullen was the host way back when.
It would have been cool if the cast of the Brady Bunch did an episode of Hollywood Squares.

My favorites were Art Fleming and Gene Rayburn. Mr. Fleming displayed almost no personality or wit on his show ("Jeopardy") - while he was certainly likable and unswervingly competent, he offered little entertainment value.
Gene Rayburn, on the other hand, went overboard (of course, with the implicit consent or even encouragement of the show-runners). And I didn't like the fact that, in its later incarnations, "Match Game" relied so heavily upon double-entendre.
I'm a "Bill Cullen" guy.
Regards,

I never heard the whole story on this but both Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly stole all of their mannerisms from this one actress and kept doing their impression of her until they died. That actress was Alice Ghostley. As soon as it was announced I said “yes. I can see that.”

That’s true about Farr, but I seem to remember him being on Match Game quite a bit, and was a regular on The Gong Show. Marcia Wallace (from The Bob Newhart Show) was on Match Game enough that I would call her a regular as well. I read that Charles and Brett Sommers had such great chemistry that Match game made them regulars. And of course, Richard Dawson was a great panelist on that show.

Let’s not forget that Peter Marshall was also a good actor and singer.
Here he is in the original movie version of “Annie” singing “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile”.
