Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
youtube ^ | 2017 | Peter Gabriel

Posted on 08/11/2024 5:57:13 PM PDT by MtnClimber

This montage of live performances of Solsbury Hill includes footage from Rockpalast (1978), Live in Athens (1987), Secret World Live (1993), Growing Up Live (2003), New Blood Live (2011) and Back To Front (2013).

Solsbury Hill was Peter's fist solo single and features on his debut, self-titled album, that was originally released in 1977. It's been a firm live favourite ever since

I bet. Hard to top.

I’ve been lucky to see a lot of great live music and Peter Gabriel is up there in the top 5.

Seen the Ramones to Miles Davis, BB King, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin, Rush, Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Little Richard, Buddy Guy, U2, Primus, and so many more. Peter Gabriel stands out.

There’s always been crap music.

Good music is out there and always has been.

I know I have to fight the urge to be old and call it all noise, but there’s still good stuff out there. But take auto tune and the inability to play live and go to hell with that. 😁

I remember when Gabriel left Genesis. Some people were saying it would be the ruin of both.

The real dividing line between "old" and "new" Genesis is when Steve Hackett left. When that happened, they became a pop band. But the two albums them made after Gabriel left but when Hackett was still there were still pretty progressive.

Gabriel had an old man sounding voice when he was 18, lol.

Fantastic concerts. Saw him a few times back in the old days, and took my wife last year. She started crying when he did Solbury Hill.

Just today I was recommended a video on YouTube about songs in the rare 7/4 meter. The main example was this song.

Coincidence?

I remember watching him live his first tour after leaving Genesis...
Ge had Fripp on guitar, Synergy on keys, Tony Levin stick bass, and Steve Hunter on lead guitar...

One heck of a show

P.S. he did perform Genesis songs

His rendition of the Bowie song “Heroes” in Verona
is excellent.

The first few notes of “Dance On A Volcano” and you knew Genesis would be fine.

Saw Steve Hackett play the entire Foxtrot album on his recent tour. Never thought I’d ever get to hear “Supper’s Ready” in its entirety live.

This song, Solsbury Hill, is about his decision/epiphany to leave Genesis.

Kinda puts the song in a new light.

The whole album is fantastic. Especially “Here Comes The Flood”, and the Barber Shop Quartet “Excuse Me”.

What a clever video. I am a huge fan of Peter Gabriel. I saw him live with Genesis on the 1975 The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour, and was totally blown away by his showmanship on solos — head and shoulders above Phil Collins, who also came out and did a solo turn. Singer, dancer, dramatist. Wish he weren’t left-leaning; but he’s not totally far left.

Gabriel is one of the top tier of performers I’ve ever seen live, and I’ve seen many, from the likes of Pavarotti and Itzak Perlman to the Stones, Zappa, Bonnie Raitt, Charlie Daniels, REM, Yes, Annie Lennox, and many, many more.

Aw, I’m sure you have a lot of outstanding many-years-old memories in your life! That’s one of mine.

I begged off from my dad’s birthday party to go see Genesis with my boyfriend. My mom was ticked; but my dad understood. Thanks, Dad (up where you now are).

Genesis was well known for their spectacular live shows.

The phallic Peter. Sometimes you have to say no to the kids.
