Jordan Chiles has been stripped of the Olympic bronze medal she won in the women's floor final after a bombshell ruling from the Court of Arbitration of Sport on Saturday.
The 23-year-old US gymnast came third in the event, behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medalist and fellow teammate Simone Biles.
But this was only after Chiles' score of 13.666, which had initially placed her fifth, was bumped up by 0.1 following an appeal from her coach.
The change to her score meant that Romania's Ana Barbosu and her teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea were pushed down to fourth and fifth, each with matching scores of 13.700.
But, in a shock ruling today, the CAS ruled the judging panel were wrong to allow Chiles' score to be increased as the appeal came outside the one minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
CAS wrote in its decision that the initial finishing order should be restored, with 18-year-old Barbosu third, teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea fourth and Chiles fifth.
USA gymnastics said it is 'devastated' by the decision, with Chiles taking to social media to say she was removing herself from social media 'for my mental health'.

Could someone here explain it to me please?
But it’s still ok for guys to fight girls!!
Barbosu's performance was superior to Chiles anyway. Chiles routine was clunky and even sloppy with her landings whereas Barbosu nailed it.
Good call, Olympics.
Her coach took more than the allowed one minute to make an appeal on scoring. After the appeal she was placed third, but the Court of Arbitration of Sport said the appeal didn’t count because it was too late. Original 5th place score restored.
A statute of limitations can be overruled only if your name is Trump.
Looks like coach appealed after the one minute ‘window’, so the judges had to reverse themselves.
The coach appealed the 13.666 score to the judges. The judges gave the gymnast an additional .1 point bump to raise it to 13.766, placing the USA gymnast in third. But I guess you have only a minute to run over to the judges to make the appeal in the first place and the coach didn’t make it over in time. So the overwatching panel took away the .1 bump to let the original 13.666 score stand, dropping the gymnast back to 5th.
Ouch. Too true. I still LOLed, though.
Seems like the right decision was made, it’s just the timing that is awkward.
I was going to ask the same thing. I read two articles about this and I have no idea.
Isn’t that the judge’s fault?
So they’re admitting her score was wrong, but they’re saying it was longer than one minute after the score, it’s irrelevant.
I think I read a headline (American Thinker?) that without patriotism, the Olympics mean nothing.
I cannot count on American patriotism, or even decency, from American athletes and press. It’s been this way for several Olympic cycles. I have long since stopped watching the Olympics and I do not care about the medal count.
Somehow, I got suckered into reading this article about nothing. Should I decide to be entertained by nothing, there is always Seinfeld.
One minute window to file an appeal. The coach was four seconds late.
At least they didn’t have to reset the clock three times, go to video reviews in slow motion and from multiple angles, etc. I used to joke about why it took 30 minutes to play the last 30 seconds of an ACC basketball game, but then basketball jumped the shark entirely and it’s been a long time since I watched any hoops. For all I know, it now takes an hour to play the last 30 seconds.
But four seconds seems a bit starchy. I know, ya gotta have a rule, and if you have a rule, ya gotta enforce the rule. But four seconds? We ain’t talking ritual purity here.
Chiles was originally in 4th place after the floor competition. The US lodged a complaint and claimed she should’ve received an extra .1 on one of her elements. The judges agreed and the Romanian girl who was in 3rd was bumped to 4th, out of the medals. They have since reversed the ruling.
The irony is the DEI crowd was loving this original result as it was an all black podium with the girl from Brazil winning gold and Biles and Chiles in silver and bronze. They claimed this was the “wave of the future “ and the picture of Biles and Chiles bowing to the Brazilian would get consideration to be placed in the Louvre.
Guess not.
The American coach threw the challenge flag after the Romanians snapped the ball.
Do you know where the .1 adjustment came from? Was it a math error?
I know how you feel, ChessExpert, but this is worthwhile reading for the lesson involved, that applies to life in general: If there are rules, you have to abide by them to win, because if you don’t, even unwittingly, you can lose despite your best effort.
I feel the same way about the Olympics. After the 1980 Olympics, I largely stopped watching them, and when they began to allow professionals to compete, I haven’t watched more than a few minutes in passing since then.
For me, without patriotism, the Olympics means nothing. In my eyes now, it is nothing more than marketing and pandering. But I don’t criticize those who watch, that is their business. That is just how it is for me.
By the way, I couldn’t find that article you mentioned (because I tried to find it to read it) if you come across it, could you send a link my way?
I've had to submit bids for jobs, sometimes right up to the minute. More than once I was cutting it close. When you submit the bid, it is time stamped with a time clock. Any bids after the exact time they specified are invalid.
