Snoop Dogg kicks off breakdancing’s Olympics debut in epic fashion

Breaking, a.k.a. break dancing, kicked off its inaugural appearance as an Olympic sport in style.

Snoop Dogg opened the competition Friday at Place de la Concorde in Paris via the coup de baton, when a wooden baton is struck on the floor to signal an event’s commencement.

Dressed in a red, white and blue tracksuit, the Grammy-nominated rapper — who has been making the most of his time in Paris and reportedly earning $500,000 per day as an Olympics correspondent for NBC and Peacock — accessorized with colorful kicks as the festivities got underway.

Men and women will compete separately at the Paris Games, with the “competition consist[ing] of battles between two athletes. Each battle consists of a number of rounds. In each round one athlete performs first, then the other responds,” according to the Olympics’ official website.

The women’s competition on Friday will conclude with a gold medal battle. The men will compete on Saturday.

Team USA’s breaking team is comprised of two b-boys, Jeffrey Louis and Victor Montalvo, and two b-girls, Sunny Choi and Logan Edra.

It’s been quite the summer for Snoop Dogg, 52, who kicked off his experience at the Games by carrying the Olympic torch before the opening ceremony on July 26.

They don’t miss a chance to try and legitimize rap as some form of music. Sure it streams and sells but I’m not impressed.

Olympic viewership must be down, which isn’t surprising since so much of what used to be unique on the Olympics is now viewable throughout the year on cable/internet.

But we already have a show called “America’s Got Talent,” and breakdancing is better suited for that kind of venue.

I’m pretty sure that it’s not you that they’re trying to impress.
Even some country music now has elements of rap.

Major sports, both professional and collegiate and including the Olympics, long ago sold their souls for tv dollars. The television networks and the streamers, most of which are now owned by big tech companies, call the shots. This is why the “cultural” trimmings of the 2024 Olympics are dominated by American pop culture, and pretty trashy American pop culture at that.

I’ve watched a couple of the soccer games and that’s it. I respect the athletes in the traditional sports who are striving for excellence. But they are trapped in a vulgar travesty of a made-for-tv spectacle.

I feel sick for France, and if were of the frog persuasion, I would be outraged. The Olympics come to Paris and are presented as a American pop culture event? The sickening thing is that France, as the host country, could have stopped this. But the French regime is ashamed of being French.

Pole dancing? You are behind the time. RuPaul’s Drag Race will be the next Olympic event. Thank of the tv ratings!

Someone has got to explain to me Snoop Dog’s appeal.

I watched a little of the Olympics at night, and they daily would show Snoop Dog. It was as if the whole Olympics was merely a platform to have him jiving around.

And they promote him very heavily the new line up for the Voice, a show I have never watched more than two minutes at a time. They also have Michael Buble, who has real talent, but use him only as a prop for Mr. Snoop Dog.

Why not a shot-drinking event, like in Raiders of the Lost Ark. I’d watch that.

If you want to catch an eyeful, the synchronized swimmers are cheeky in their one-piece thongs.
