If a Russian war blogger is to be believed, Russian paratroopers are apparently doing the one thing airborne units haven't done in a very long time - parachute into a hot zone.
These were messy, high casualty endeavors even before the advent of SAMs, with the German capture of Crete being the high water mark. And in the current situation, unlike Crete, which was manned by an under-equipped garrison force lacking armor and stragglers from the defeat on the Greek mainland, the Ukrainian force surrounding the Russian objective consists of armored front line units with what appears to be organic SAM cover.
