The conflict started when a group of rifle-armed blacks fired into a crowd of whites.
What was happening was a black was arrested and accused of assaulting a white woman, the local paper made noises about a possible lynching, some black ww1 veterans showed up to prevent it. When a deputy attempted to take a rifle away from one, it went off, and the black riflemen thought they were under attack and started shooting.
