John Kerry got three Purple Hearts, but probably never actually merited one. One was for a grenade fragment that made what was essentially a paper cut. He reported to sick call, was issued a band aide, but insisted the medic record it in his medical record jacket. On another occasion, he injured himself with a hand grenade “destroying” a cache of VC rice, but not while under fire. You are not supposed to be awarded a Purple Heart for a self inflicted wound, or friendly fire, unless friendly fire was inflicted during a conflict while under hostile fire, which he was not. I forget the circumstances of the third. The point was that someone awarded three PH in VN was entitled to request transfer out of the theater and I bet his CO could not wait to approve that request.
