Here’s How an Open Democratic Convention Would Work
NYTs ^ | 2/21/24 | Elaine Kamark

Ezra Klein: So last week on the show, I made the argument that Democrats should pick a candidate at the convention this year. That Joe Biden is capable of doing the job of president but that his campaign is not going well, that it is not clear, to me, at least, that he is capable of running successfully for president.

This is the way political parties throughout most of American history have picked their nominees for president. But it’s a funny kind of suggestion, because it is somehow simultaneously novel and ancient.

So what I wanted to do today was talk through how conventions work — how an open convention works, what kind of politicking happens at it, what kinds of candidates win, how they win and also talk through what would happen this year. I mean, what if Biden dropped out in April? What if he dropped out in July or August? How does that change it? What happens if he drops out before delegates are selected? What happens if after? All these things create very different dynamics.

Nope. Rutabaga will be nominated in the virtual convention next week. The ballots (90% of whom are Biden pledged delegates) are already in.

There will be no open convention.

The damage to the candidate would be fantastic. Rutabaga would still be president and the candidate would be forced to run on his policies. Jilly is NOT going to allow some other DemoKKKrat to trash her senile hubby.

The situation is this: If, after Rutabaga has been named the official nominee, he has such a massive health problem, then he drops out and the DNC can name his replacement. The problem with that is, it can ONLY be Harris. No way that can happen unless he also resigns from the presidency. It’s almost impossible for any DemoKKKrat to claim that he’s incapable of being a nominee but is fully capable of being Pres.

So Harris replaces him as Pres. (Remember, SHE is the ONLY ONE who can use Biden/Harris campaign money, which is drying up). She then names a veep WHOM THE HOUSE MUST APPROVE (doubtful they’d approve someone who would significantly help her ticket—might even delay). Now SHE has to run on all of Rutabaga’s weaknesses, his policies, without bringing a single new strength to the table, and now has LESS money.

They are trapped. Been saying it for months.

We will find out soon enough. I hope you’re right. If he stays and this gets stretched out to the convention while they have an open fight over immediate pardons, it would be hitting the daily double again.

You are correct. Joe will not drop out, Jill will not allow it. His mega doners will then have to decide to continue funding him r let his campaign go down inflames taking the down votes for other offices go not the dumpster. On the positive side, it gives both parties a chance to regroup, soul search, begin to find presidential timber. It also gives JD Vance 4 years to prove his metal.

Or they can give Heels Up the heave ho, return the campaign dollars (then resale the dem party) and have an open convention.

“A speech has been drafted for him. He will continue on as president. He also will not, I’m told, endorse Vice President [Kamala] Harris as his successor. They’re hoping that he will endorse an open process in which the convention will be open to Vice President Harris and a few other candidates in Chicago to pick the Democratic nominee for president.”

This is the only real report of the dementia patient leaving. That’s the most prominent speculation. NOTHING happens without those pardons!

The Dems biggest problem is finding someone willing to head their ticket who is strong enough to keep hope alive for their downticket races. Lots of ambitious duds are available, but not viable. Those who are viable don’t want to wreck their futures with a crushing defeat.

Harris has a history of incompetence and totally collapsing support once she meets opposition. If she can’t take charge and run their convention as party “leader” (and can you see her doing that?), she doesn’t have any business trying to run the country. (

The Dem to be concerned about is Michelle Obama, who knows she lacks the right stuff to be President, and so far has displayed no appetite for the role of puppet. Will the Dems successfully beg her to “save the world” by running? Some will certainly be pressuring her. If Michelle attends the Dem Convention, gives a speech, etc., look out.

Not a chance of that.

It would mean having to raise, at minimum, $1 BILLION in less than 30 days. Can’t be done, especially now that Silicon Valley is shifting $ to Trump.

Nope they are stuck.

Halperin is wishcasting.

Every single statement from Rutabaga’s actual team says this is horsepuckey. He isn’t leaving.
