SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- An Illinois sheriff’s deputy charged with murder in the death of a Black woman shot her in the face during a tense moment over a pot of water in her home, authorities said Thursday.
The details were in a court document filed in support of keeping former Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson in custody without bond.
Sonya Massey was killed at her home in Springfield, about 200 miles (322 kilometers) south of Chicago, after deputies responded to her 911 call early July 6, State’s Attorney John Milhiser said.
Prosecutors said Grayson “aggressively yelled” at Massey to put a pot down. They said she put her hands in the air and ducked for cover before she was shot in the face.
Prosecutors said Grayson discouraged the other deputy from getting a medical kit from their vehicle.

County sheriff is more about politics than law enforcement as is everything in one of the most politically rotten states in the union.
Deputy was probably unqualified with little if any training.
Probably got the job as a political favor to somebody.
In Illinois there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans.
It saw two successive governors from so-called opposition parties briefly incarcerated at the SAME time.
In downstate Illinois candidates tend to run away from party affiliation.
Not unusual to see ads for candidates downstate that make no mention of affiliation.

Depends if the video shows the pot was sat down *and* she had stepped far enough away from it. Was it boiling and was she threatening the cops? No matter the temperature, was she intent on bashing him with it? Anything can be a weapon. The article is lacking the details.

It appears that the woman called 911, when the cops arrived she got into some kind of confrontation and wound up getting shot. She may have threatened him with boiling water, or otherwise wound him up. He may have lost his temper, and overreacted. Cops cannot be allowed to do that.
There was another case recently, where some scamsters sent an uber driver to pick up money demanded in an extortion scam from the intended victim. The intended victim was an older white man. The black female uber driver was an innocent participant. The intended victim held her at gunpoint and shot her dead. She was not threatening him. The guy was just wrong. I don’t think the extortionist has been caught, but he/they are clearly guilty of felony murder. That doesn’t absolve the shooter.

Yes. And as others have noted, there could be much more to this story. But a pot of boiling water makes for a very short-range weapon.
So it seems like either the cop for some reason couldn’t quickly retreat, or he’s a murderer. One or the other.
Indicates consciousness of guilt.
We need more detail but looks like a bad, deadly shoot. Hence, the murder charge. Usually LEO's have the extra presumption.
