Whatever the ideology, some just have a screw loose. Stephen Paddock was, in retrospect, a murderous psychopath. But any reasonably intelligent person who seeks notoriety by committing mass murder or assassinating someone famous isn’t about to spill the beans by advertising his intentions to the people around him.

In a way, Crooks is a throwback. For most of history, crazies sought a kind of fame by murdering political leaders. In the past 40+ years, we’ve seen just one attack on a presidential contender since Hinckley’s. Since that time, fame-seeking psychos have mostly committed mass shootings, not political murder.
