230 yards - I disagree - not too far for an amateur if he has some knowledge.
I shot my first (and only) rifle match with an M1-Garand at 200 yards with open sights. Despite having an old WW2 stock with actual matchbooks used as spacers to tighten the mechanics to the stock, I was able to shoot around a 3 inch group from prone position.
A shooter with a scope would have no problem at 230 yards as long as he’d learned about steady holds, breathing control, and had a mechanically sound rifle.
I will admit that I’m kind of a gun guy, so that may sway my judgement a bit.

With you. 230 is not that far. An amateur’s problem there would be the down angle. A good rangefinder would fix that. Using an inverted ‘T’ based on the clavicular notch for an armored target.
