Visual Capitalist's Pallavi Rao breaks down which countries host the most top 100 universities in the world, as per the World University Rankings 2024, sourced from Times Higher Education.

The ranking measures 1,906 universities across 108 countries on 18 performance indicators across broad pillars like teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

The U.S. Dominates in Higher Education

Not only does the U.S. have the most top 100 universities (36), it is also the most represented country (169 universities) in the entire ranking catalog of nearly 2,000 schools.

Adding the U.S. number to that of Canada’s (3) gives a regional total for North America (39) that compares similarly to Europe’s (36) regional total.

When looking at the top 10 specifically, the U.S. (7), and UK (3) split the pot for the very top of the ranking, which contains the world’s best universities.

Oxford University ranks first overall while Stanford University (#2) is first for teaching, and MIT (#3) is first in research quality.

Looking at top-ranking schools on a per capita basis, Singapore boasts two top 100 universities while having just over 5.5 million people. Switzerland, with nearly 9 million people, has three of the world’s best.

Notably South America and Africa do not host a single top 100 university, at least according to this ranking framework and the criteria within.

Congrats to all. Including USA’s Stanford University. But alas, Stanford imported a bunch of anti-American, anti-Christian, anti-Jewish IslamoNazis from the middle east. It has both embarrassed and disrupted the university. And many donors and parents are sending their money and children elsewhere now. Who wants their kids exposed to such filthy liars and/or to have their studies interrupted by garbage “demonstrations” or “sit-downs” or “sit-ins” or any other kind of disruption? To Hell with them all! And if Stanford doesn’t send the Fakestinian/ IslamoNazi agents home TOOT SWEET, tout de suite...immediately... smiles smiles, it will GTH with them.

Northwestern was rated above U of Chicago?? No way, unless the sports teams are taken into consideration.

and MIT (#3) is first in research quality.

Bovine effluence. It has become like Harvard it's other Cambridge cousin, minting gilt edge degreed advisors to the deep state. The genuinely best US research university for the physical sciences and engineering is Cal Tech which has largely stayed out of the big government advisory board racket.

A relative of mine has his undergraduate degree from McGill and law degree from the University of Toronto. This after a slow unimpressive start ... a HS dropout he decided to get his act together ... a late bloomer.

If you went to Harvard and don’t know what a woman is, you didn’t go to a good school.

That is a US News survey of American colleges. The article was primarily about a different survey of international universities by (London) Times Higher Education.

The international survey seems to me to have more to do with scientific research and the accomplishments of faculty and graduates, while the US News survey takes other factors into account, like the undergraduate experience and the reputation of a school among educational professionals.

Go here for the international survey results:

Thank you. Why did they link to a different survey from the article? Weird.

Funny how Yale has fallen so much in recent years in the survey you properly posted.
