She was the ONLY person who could have possibly played Olive at that time.

Popeye is such a weird weird movie. You can definitely tell that Roger Altman directed it, with his style of cuts and zoom-ins. It was well-cast.

Even as a kid, I found her performance as the weak, spineless, screaming Wendy Torrance in “The Shining” extremely annoying and upsetting

I kept thinking “c’mon girl, get it together!” (and in the end, Wendy barely managed it)

Which means, as an actress, Duvall played it perfectly

She passed away broke and in a trailer home.
Why doesn’t Hollywood establish some type of pension system for actors who fall on hard times?

Shelley had one heck of a time filming the Shining from what I’ve read. Some incredible acting. RIP.

Maybe she should have been taken to the doctor.

For the scene when Wendy is on the stairs holding the bat to defend herself against Jack, Stanley Kubrick had her do that scene 127 times for the camera. He wanted her SCARED and terrified of what her husband had become. It became so much that she finished filming the scene dehydrated and blisters on her hands from gripping the bat. What you see on the screen is not acting. That's legitimate exhaustion and horror.

To this day that remains the most takes of a single scene in movie history.

127 -—Fascinating!
I believe it.
Kubrick knew what he wanted!
.
And Jack kept his distance!

Kubrick ordered her to do 80 takes for one scene.

Why doesn’t Hollywood establish some type of pension system for actors who fall on hard times?

From what I understand there's supposed to be. Comes with being a member of the Screen Actors Guild, or something. The more a person performs the more "points" they score toward that.

When she was making Murder She Wrote, Angela Landsbury made it her mission to hire actors and actresses who hadn't worked in decades, so that they could accumulate points toward their pensions.

And then there are residuals. But God only knows how much those are now that The Shining has been out for almost 45 years.
