This was not a case of a group of irresponsible teens who were throwing a party because their parents went away. These men were all in their 30s, with families and steady jobs.

Whatever happened to them in the backyard happened very quickly. There was no time for any of them to get back into the house, or to try to help the other two if they suddenly fell ill. They had been drinking beer while watching the game, but that alone doesn't explain anything. My theory is that they decided to smoke some pot, which, unknown to them, had been laced with fentanyl. I read one story that said fentanyl can cause the body to rapidly heat up, which may explain why they went out into the yard despite the bitter cold, maybe to cool off? As for the guy who remained behind in the house, I don't know what his motive would be in intentionally harming the others.

Hyperthermia is a documented side effect in fentanyl use.
