Look at it from the perspective of a kind a power struggle.
The elite Dems have an interest in preserving and amassing power, (one highly suspects, I don't know any of this for certain) and the way to do this is to install someone from an elite inner circle (again, all just my guesses). The Dems apparently don't really trust their voters (recall the "super delegates?) , so delaying the actual nomination to the last minute (with all kinds of really cheap theatrics) then guiding the nominating process toward their own candidate will work fine with the obedient Dem voters.
Moochelle would be my guess for the most likely to appear from such a bait and switcharoo.
