Years ago in Norfolk, Virginia the locals wanted sailors gone. So the navy paid everyone in cash with 2 dollar bills. Opened the locals eyes to the economic impact should the navy move out. People in Barcelona should be careful what they ask for. Tourist dollars probably account for a significant percent of their economy. Unemployment is harsh.

That was my first thought. I don’t think we could do that today. The mechanism to handle the logistics don’t esist.

I recall that too. I think that was also used elsewhere to determine where the military pay went.

Without the tourist industry, Barcelona will become a ghost town. I have spent a reasonable amount of time in that beautiful city and every merchant I know realises the value of the Yankee and European dinero.

“People in Barcelona should be careful what they ask for. Tourist dollars probably account for a significant percent of their economy. Unemployment is harsh.”

There are some serious people predicting that Europe is devolving into a ‘tourist economy’ in the near future, do to their continuous, self-inflicted, economy-crashing policies, which include:
1. Climate Change (ending nukes, coal, oil, gas, etc.)
2. Backfire Sanctions (on Russia), and likely Backfire Sanctions (on China)
3. Mass Immigration

Unfortunately for Europe, its post-Industrial future of tourism will likely be quite limited due to the last item putting much of the continent off limits.

It will be interesting to see whether Europeans take their de-industrialization and population replacement peacefully, or if they lash-out, one last time.

During Desert Eagle and Desert Storm Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth emptied out... 6 months later the local businesses were singing the blues cuz there was no service personnel patronizing as they were all overseas. I think the local population in Virginia Beach and the surrounding areas learn a lesson from that. And then came Iraq and Afghanistan.

I was born in Norfolk, VA, raised in a military family, and served there on occasion.

My Mom used to speak bitterly about the Navy “joke” that they had signs in Norfolk that said “No Dogs or Sailors on The Grass”.

She didn’t appreciate the joke.

But yes...I agree. They should think twice.

Marchers don’t care. Commie trash don’t care about $$ so long as they can steal it from producers and give it out to supporters.

PRETTY CLEVER response.

MOST people have no idea how much their local economy relies on tourism.

Try living with an influx of wild tourists. I totally agree with the protests. We lived much better before this area was “found”. The residents have to hunker inside every holiday. Prices on everything is sky high. There is a new group of strangers coming in every few days so a secure safe neighborhood is a thing of the past.
