The electors are not on the ballot. The nominees are.
the nominees’ names are listed for the convenience of the voter, but whether the name can be changed or not on the ballot has no effect on who gets elected in the contest, the slate of electors get elected.
What makes it doubly bad is that originally, they were voting for known leaders in the state who would serve as Electors and then make a conscientious choice when the time came to vote in the Electoral College.
Today, we're actually voting for who gets to pick the Electors. It's not even clear to me that the "slate" of Electors is finalized before voting takes place in November. I think the parties have ways of swapping out one Elector for another up until the Electoral College actually meets to vote.
Imagine if we had to actually vote for each Elector individually? Personally, I'd love to see a state like California with 54 Electoral College votes try to run an Election where two or three people per Electoral College spot run for the position in each Congressional district. Take off the name of the candidate and run the names of the non-government officials who want to become an Elector.
