I agree. All colossal busts. I think two reasons for the fizzles is light pollution on the one hand and overselling on the other.

Yep, remember both, but Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake more than made up for them. I saw Hale-Bopp in the middle of nowhere in the Nevada desert and saw Hyakuyake a few miles south of Denver. Both were spectacular and stretched across a large part of the sky.

True, but in 1954 the record made by Bill Haley and His Comets was regarded by millions as a favourable apparition.
