Taiwan was founded by anti-commie Chinese - they lost a civil war against commies in late 40’s and escaped to that island. Taiwan's name is actually The Republic of China and their authorities claim to be the real government of China or at least claimed, before reds became so powerful.

Remember that about a million ROC went to Taiwan after they lost the war in 1949 and there were already 6 million Taiwanese there who were part of Japan.

ROC were able to retreat to Taiwan because they were the Allied occupying force of that part of Japan after surrender in 1945.
