One of my all-time favorites! I was in a local production (summer stock) back in the ‘70s. In the orchestra.

In music theory we had to sing melodies using the musical alphabet.

For example- the opening to Beethovan’s Fifth would be Mi Mi Mi Do-o-o, Re Re Re Ti-i-i

That’s because, other than names, and some very broad outlines, the movie has nothing to do with the actual facts (like most movies). It’s a magnificent movie though, which I recommend to anyone.

I'm barely old enough to remember when this movie came out. Some of the kids in school and teachers were talking about how wonderful it was.

Many years went by and I never saw the movie until 2014. Now I understand why it is one of the most beloved movies of all time. Quite charming and emotional. As a side note, my cousin was named after Liesl.

We had to do that in Theory, too. That was in the ‘60s, and I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do it now. Mom could do it easily until the day she died at 99.

In the production I was in, it was an outdoor theater. Opening night I was in the orchestra pit early, warming up. It was abnormally windy that evening, and one of the stage props (a pew, for the opening scene with nuns singing), was blown into the orchestra pit. It fell about 8 feet to the pit floor-thank God no one was sitting there yet, they might’ve been killed. That pew weighed about 50-60 lbs.

Somehow, you think a story about a widower with a bunch of children who is engaged to be married but falls in love with the virgin nun who is babysitting his children is gay?

In an age before television and internet, the father and his governess/bride teach all the children to play instruments and sing, and it helps them flee the Nazis, and that's so gay?

They end up migrating to the United States and open a hotel in the mountains of New England, since they were accustomed to an Alpine environment, and the children grew up there, continued to entertain with singing and kept the inn going until they were old—the true story of what happened to them—and that's gay?

Please explain, we're on the edge of our seats.
