A 19-year-old hiker who tragically drowned in a Utah waterfall and accidentally filmed her own death has been identified.
Cynthia Ann Grimwood of Springville went hiking with her dog around 3 pm on Friday afternoon at Horsetail Falls in Alpine, and was swept away in the fast moving current after falling into the swollen river.
Two hikers found a small dog and her cell phone that captured the teen walking into the water before she disappeared, the Utah County Sheriff Sgt. Spencer Cannon told KSL.com.
The water level was 'abnormally high' that day and officials have called the young woman's death a 'tragic accident.'
Cynthia's body was located on Friday night two hours after the tragedy. Multiple search and rescue crews were involved in locating the teen's remains. On Saturday, her body was recovered before her identity was confirmed on Monday.

When we get flash flood warnings invariably there are people that will drive in the areas where the Flash flood warnings mean the most. With predictable results
Had an in law who wanted to move here from Florida, got all bent out of shape when the realtor said we’re done for the day we’ve got flash flood warnings.
She moved here, :-(
She eventually moved away:-)
Not sure of the circumstances but rocky riverbeds are super slippery! Once you fall your done!
Nailed it.
I’ve got nothing to add.
“Once you fall your done!”
No
That is your done
See: The Grand Canyon
One time in the 70’s, saw a piece of road that was maybe 1/4 mile long. Completely buried in water - several acres - by rain only. A couple of 4x4 trucks were there with their extra lights on it - it was astounding looking at water covering what I had seen for years as 2 fields with a long asphalt road up the middle. It looked like a churning lake.
A guy I knew and I were installing a spoiler on my Mach 1 that night - we ordered a pizza (for dine-in).
Soooooo, we went the other way through town - got maybe 1/4 mile from the pizza place - four-lane city street - also buried in water with a car stuck in the middle - the water was not too far from the top of the hood - the engine was likely all but submerged - at least to the valve covers.
So we gave up - there were other roads but it was looking pretty bad in several places and it was dark by then.
I don’t remember how many days it rained - it looked like some scenes out of “Hard Rain” if you’ve ever seen that movie.
The water level?
A shame. “Cindy Grimwood” was a bankable name.
So sorry. Two drownings in that river this week. It’s mid-June, but the mountain snow melt is still strong.
Alvin on the outskirts of Houston got 43 inches of rain in 24 hours.
“In late July 1979, Tropical Storm Claudette made landfall in Texas and dumped a U.S.-record 43 inches of rain on Alvin in a 24-hour period, according to the National Weather Service.”
wow
I wished I had been there, it must have had people going mental as the hours dragged on and the deluge was constant, never ending with all the sound and noise and the rising waters. A bizarre and unique thing to experience, a rain that won’t stop.
Modern Hollywood also plays a role in convincing women to live dangerously, and die, like men, or worse, like fake men. The most amazing thing about Hollywood is they haven't beat to death the story of Narcissus, with remake after remake. There is so much acting talent with real-life mastery of narcissism, they could cast an entire film crew for free. Spoiler alert: Narcissus, while making content for his Instagram page, ends up in the water and drowns.
Darwin award. She would have done something else back in the day to earn the award, unfortunately.
It’s easy to stay focused on the beauty of nature, but we should never forget about its unbridled power.
She brought her small dog with her to her suicide?
-PJ
Who knows, if that was her state of mind?
Just a possibility, not suggesting this was the case.
As a pastor and a youth pastor indirectly touched by teen suicide, I have studied the subject extensively. It is a VERY frustrating subject.
This type of question is the kind of thing you have to go on when trying to make sense of it, and you are right that absent other behaviors that point to suicide, like including some departing message on the film, she did not bring her puppy to her suicide.
Teen suicide is sometimes a subject of psychology. Very frustrating.
Teen suicide is sometimes a subject of sociology, very frustrating.
Kind Regards PJ!
