I heard many years ago that recycling facilities don’t care about paper, plastic and glass. They are there to sort through and find precious metals and electronics or other items that may have rare earth metals. It’s a sorting facility fishing for goodies.

In some place where the law doesn’t require materials like plastic and glass to be recycled, the “recycling” facility just passes it along to the land fill.

I worked at a recycling company. They had special magnetic machines that pulled metals and coins out of the waste.
