On a very basic level it all looks like the war machine got its way. View from outer space:

1. 9-11 happens / Saudi throat cutters and BinLaden are involved

2. We (USA) attack Afghanistan where terrorist goat humpers are training and BinLaden is hiding

3. We (USA) attack Iraq

Now doesn't step 3 seem like a bit of a leap? Oh yeah, I forgot about the WMD's. We were played.

As Trump said in one of the debates, "that one was a beauty" (mocking Jeb in terms of W's stupidity going into Iraq)

The Tigris and Euphrates both start in Turkey. The Euphrates also goes through Syria before entering Iraq. Do the dams in those countries contribute to Iraq's water scarcity?

Lots of water in the Persian Gulf but I don't know if desalination projects would be feasible--they would have to pump the water a long way to where the population centers are (and Iraq has only a tiny coastline).

If April Glaspie had told Saddam "We'll meet you in Riyadh" at that meeting in August 1991, the world would be a better place.

USA was still in a malaise due to our defeat in the Vietnam War. We did not have confidence in our capabilities until Operation Desert Storm. Saddam probably thought that Bush 41, like Jimmy Carter, was all talk.

It’s fair to say that we pretty much broke that country back in 2004. But that was 20 years ago, and we spent billions of dollars on the replacement regime. If it’s still broken, it’s not our fault. They’ve had time, and they had the money. Their problem is that can’t get along with others. Or each other.
