Thieves in California are now stealing fire hydrants and everyone is asking the exact same question that you're asking

Even for crime-ridden, rapidly-descending-into-anarchy California, this is pretty crime-ridden, rapidly-descending-into-anarchy California:

A series of fire hydrant thefts in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles has left residents without a working hydrant near their homes.

The thefts of four hydrants near the intersection of 82nd Street and Hooper Avenue mean the block doesn't have even one operating hydrant, KTLA's Jennifer McGraw reports.

It's no joke. The crooks are literally ripping the hydrants off the street and taking them away.

Now, you likely have just one question to ask after seeing that hydrant stump in the sidewalk:

Namely: "Why would someone steal a fire hydrant? Is it actually profitable to do so?"

[...water pipes as rocket tubes for their next 8000 missile bombardment.”

You may be onto something, if you wanted a shrapnel-laden bomb that could be placed, in plain view, in anywhere USA....

I was thinking if you stole the hydrant there would be water leaking all over the place.

I mean all you need is the right tool to turn the hydrant on — so if you removed the entire thing wouldn’t there be water leaking???

My scrap metal isn’t even worth taking to the scrapper so I throw it in the trash. Steel scrap is about 5 cents a pound. Are scrap yards not the least suspicious when someone takes a fire hydrant for $7?

Any scrap yard with a fire hydrant gets an automatic $10,000 fine would cool off the demand for this market.

+++++++++++++++++

If a guy is stealing $6 worth of scrap, a $10k fine may not be the solution. A year of hard labor might be better..

“The crooks are literally ripping the hydrants off the street”

idiots: not “literally ripping” them off the street, but literally UNBOLTING them!

you can see from the pics that they’ve actually left behind the bolts after they’ve unscrewed them ...

It’s reported they shut the water off beforehand.

What a lousy time wasting site.

You have to wade through all that mess to see the one sentence.

This doesn't look like thievery for scrap metal. My suspicion would that someone wants the curb freed up for parking.

If you go to the street view for 82nd Street and Hooper Avenue, the oil stains along the curb, including along the red curb for the fire hydrant, point to a lot of cars parking overnight.

I'd suspect there are an inordinate number of illegals living in the neighborhood, further driving up the need for parking, and not just because the houses have bars on the windows but because it's L.A.

And when that fire can’t be brought under control it will be Trump’s fault. Automatically.

Nope... the valve is normally 4-6 feet underground (less if there is not a frost problem)

they only gush in the movies when hit with a car.

generally they are cast iron. I can’t remember the last time it was over 10 cents a pound.

Any scrap yard accepting fire hydrants and not asking questions is part of the crime.

The fine would be to the processor who accepts it as scrap.

It doesn’t have to be profitable. They do it just to do it, because they have no respect for property or other people.

In my own neighborhood, I noticed those buttons you push to make the traffic light say “walk” were being vandalized and made unpushable. This was on busy intersections, where there is no way you can cross without the “walk” sign; you’d be taking your life in your hands. I often had to cross three streets just to get across one street. The city would fix the buttons only to have them vandalized again. Why would the vandals do it? How does it benefit them? It doesn’t have to benefit them. They’re just a-holes, savages, jerks.

Not why but how?

Those things are HEAVY!

And it’s just cast iron.

Any scrap yard that accepts metal that is clearly stolen needs to be shut down and do time.
