"Jacobson came around 50 feet away from the bear when reality hit. She abruptly turned and high-tailed it home without her dog."

When danger reared it's ugly head,
She bravely turned her tail and fled.

I joke. I kid. In a similar situation, I would've said, "Damn. I'm gonna miss Zeus. He was a good dog."

I'd say she loved her dog enough to forget she's dealing with an apex predator until reality kicked in. There is a bear saying " if its black you must attack, if its brown lay on the ground, and if its white kiss your a$$ good night.

iow, black bears arent normally aggressive, ( Mama bears excluded) brown bears will hopefully just sniff you before they eat you, and polar bears, well, You are 99% on the menu.
