Going deep underwater has similarities to going into deep space. We would like to send humans to Mars, for example, because we believe they could make more discoveries over a shorter time than robot cars that have to wait as much as an hour for a command from Earth to reach them.
No matter how deep we go under water, however, the signal delay will be negligible. A craft with arms could be operated by someone on shipboard who would have a better view from a camera signal shipside as someone looking out a porthole inside the underwater craft.
The only reason to put a human so far down is for human interest which might increase funding and TV revenues

The stainless steel balls are the pressure vessel. The fiberglass skin covers the skeleton and external equipment only.
The Navy isn’t stupid ... unlike the people who built a submarine out of carbon fiber ...

I worked on the DSRV 2 yrs and it was so antiquated I was stunned. Just something like a 1960’s Indy Car, all manuel switches, old control knobs.Im sure there was A computer but I never saw it while sitting in the Pilots seat. Submariners are a unique bunch and that’s putting it mildly !
