WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump plans to announce at the Libertarian National Convention on Saturday that he intends to commute "Silk Road" website operator Ross Ulbricht's life in prison sentence, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Ulbricht was sentenced to life in federal prison in 2015 for creating and operating a hidden website known as the "Silk Road" that people used to buy and sell drugs, among other illegal goods and services.
Many libertarians have called for Ulbricht's release. At the convention on Saturday, the crowd was filled with "free Ross" signs and took up chants in support of Ulbricht.
However, Trump's previous comments about drug dealers are in conflict with Saturday's planned announcement about Ulbricht.
The former president has said that the death penalty should be instituted for certain drug dealers, depending on the severity of the crime.

Dread Pirate Roberts did nothing wrong.
Still waiting for him to come on.
So much for Trump’s “Law and Order” stance.
“The former president has said that the death penalty should be instituted for certain drug dealers”
I would support this IF bankers who accommodate the cartels face the same fate.
That was brilliant and the crowd loved it. If you want Ross freed, DJT is the one to make it happen soonest.
Well, he pardoned a bunch of black drug dealers during his last term in office. Maybe he could pardon a white drug dealer for once?
Unlike the Associated dePressed, I don't see a conflict between endorsing free commerce and executing those who push illegal and deadly drugs to exploited idiots. But then again, I'm a rational American, not a Communist propagandist.
I’m over the moon. Ross has one FRiend here at least look at my post history ive been posting about him since 2020
Bad move. This guy is rightly in jail.
Well, I guess that's only fair, but they'll call him rayciss anyway.
I met his mom at FreedomFest a couple of years ago. 11 years is enough.
Definitely
He also touched on crypto issues which many may have missed. They loved that on X too
For the rest of his life?
Ross? Yes.
Hunter agrees.

A former Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent was sentenced today to 78 months in prison for extortion, money laundering and obstruction of justice, which crimes he committed while working as an undercover agent investigating Silk Road, an online marketplace used to facilitate the sale and purchase of illegal drugs and other contraband....
I agree. I was stunned when he said he’d commute that guy’s sentence. Not a check in the plus column.
You think locking him up for the rest of his life was fair punishment?
There is such a thing as excessive punishment. A lot of the J6ers have received it.
I don’t think anyone but a few hardcore quasi-anarchist libertarian types think Ulbricht didn’t do anything worth punishing. But you need punishment that fits the crime. That’s what the Eighth Amendment is about.
I think many would argue that in Ross Ulbricht’s case, the punishment was excessive. Trump is not offering to pardon him, merely to commute his sentence.
It’s worth noting that everyone else involved in teh Silk Road case got significant ly less time.
