The route to the summit of Mount Everest is jam packed with eager climbers frantically rushing to reach the world's highest point - even as several adventurers and their guides were killed or went missing this week.
Shocking video shared to social media showed how a string of dozens of climbers snaked up the glacier in the high-altitude 'death zone' - so called because the air is so thin that most have to rely on supplementary oxygen to survive.
The 'human traffic jam', captured on May 20, came as the mountain enjoyed a 'weather window' - a brief period of clear conditions in which successfully reaching the summit is a less perilous task.

I went through a phase where I read the Everest and K2 books about various expeditions. Ugh, no more!
There are several good documentaries on Everest on the streaming services. Veteran climbers say that years ago it was a feat to climb the mountain, now it is just a hike.
(I Photoshopped this some years ago after seeing this picture...:)
For me, it was the famous “Into Thin Air” book written by John Krakauer that really hit me how physically sucky that whole experience is.
Not my cup of tea, but I do understand why people do it. I think it is crazy, but hey...different strokes for different folks.
I did it!!! I (fill in goal)!!!
Pride is a powerful drug. Just look at the thousands of dollars individuals spend to feed their ego, .....for a two minute view from up there.
Climbing Everest is not exactly on my bucket list.
Not on mine, either. But I DID see the eclipse last month.
It’s like adopting an african child. anyone whose anyone will have done so by this season and have the selfie to prove it.
I sold a telescope to a man who summited Everest twice. He actually made 3 attempts, was successful on the first and third attempts. The second one, he had to turn back as he was low on oxygen. This quite a few years ago.
I never got to ask him about his experiences- he had to leave because he wanted to get home before the weather turned. He flew from his city to where I was IN HIS OWN AIRPLANE. THAT probably cost him more than what he paid me for the telescope.
Most climbers are Democrats? Who knew?
Waiting in line to finally scale the magic mountain? Absurd. While waiting in the line the weather can change rapidly and they all die. Where is the adventure when you’re number 65 in line?
My orthopedist has climbed Everest, and spends at least two or three months every year climbing mountains all over the world. He enjoys it, so why not?
Also, they need to install either the world’s longest zipline or something like a construction-site debris chute for climbers to descend Everest. Save them a lot of time.
Man that is so yesterday. Haven’t you heard? The new trend is the trans gender child with new and improved appendages removed .
Interesting. It was late at night here, so I couldn’t see it. 😃
I admit I’m behind the times.
