I was just telling a brother yesterday that I was considering doing just that - dumping windows and getting Linux.
Thx...I was going to look for a new desktop, but maybe I will try what you have done. Any particular desktop I should look for? Brand, memory, etc...I am not a techie.
A kinda dumb question...would our financial stuff be safer using Linux. (I might be able to convince hub to switch, if that is the case)

But not as good as Lotus was. Like Word is far inferior to WordPerfect for DOS. (When WP transitioned to Windows format it lost a lot of functionality.)
Maybe he can convert his Tesla business to a Linux desktop business. The plant is already in Texas. Business opportunity!
I have been using Linux with a virtual Windows install since 2007. I use multiple screens on one monitor and screen 4 is always Windoze. It loads automatically on system startup.
The other option is a dual boot system where you select Linux or Windoze on boot.
My absolute favorite feature of WP back in the day was "reveal codes". (F7 IIRC). It was a Godsend for fixing formatting issues. It's one of the few features that I'd really love to see in OpenOffice.
These companies ain’t getting any better or any less woke either.

System76 specializes in Linux-specific desktops and laptops if you’re in the market anyways.
I’m often times spending-money-averse so consider that when reading into my posts. I know others don’t do the same.
One good thing that will come from a Linux-centric vendor would be they would tailor to your needs to some extent, and all the hardware will be ensured to work out of the box without any question.
I look at it an say $3 thumb drive or $500-1000+ new machine - I’ll always try the thumb drive first. It’s only a mindset. :-)
Just curious do mean something like Quickbooks? Or purely web-based stuff like online banking/investing/etc?
Honestly digital financial safety is probably the same, unless you are habitually clicking links in your email inbox and downloading the file that’s lookhere.pdf.exe. Those exe files simply won’t work at all on Linux. In that sense, Linux is nominally more secure.
At least for now, anti-virus and malware software ($ub$cription$) are not firm requirements on Linux. But that’s bound to change sooner rather than later given the platform is used by more people than ever before - and it is increasing. Keeping current with the security updates and not looking at shady sites, basically good common sense user practices will likely do more than the platform itself. I’m just being honest.
VPN providers, such as NordVPN, are more and more incorporating support for Linux. It’s not universal yet, but it’s going to be fairly soon.
Easy now, we will get there. We should also consider using Zoom, there is a lot to gain by desktop sharing. However, we should at least collect some information and determine what you have tried in the past - and try some new things first.
Partly if nothing else, I know that there are other Linux users around here. I will keep the lead to help you however you need but there is surely a safety of numbers that its not well advised to simply abandon.
Have you ever tried a live boot with Linux on a USB stick? It’s an extremely simple process.
Any machine that can run Windows 7 will run faster with Linux on it.

So “they” warned me back in 2020. For me, that only helped things. No more pushing through updates, as every update before that seemed to make matters worse.
I recall only one instance where having Windows 7 created an issue. I absolutely could not do what I needed to do. I’m sure that will be the case more often as time passes; we shall see. Hubby has 10 on his computers, and he’s forever having problems.
WP for Windows still has Reveal Codes, but it’s more convoluted than with DOS.
In WP, a Table was powerful in that it was a basic spreadsheet and you could do calculations in it.
You could “block” (”select” in Word) a section of a document, and save that section as a new document.
In the DOS version, on the same line, you could do justify left, justify center, and justify right using keystrokes. When it went to Windows it lost that functionality. A far as I know, the only way to do that is to create a 3-column table and hide the gridlines.
Dot leaders made sense. Headers and footers were easier than with Windows version, and 1,000 times easier than with Word.
In Word Perfect they have a justification setting called “all”. It is like full justification, but it will make every line take up the full width between the margins. This is great if you want to spread 1 line across a page or cell.
I despise Word.
