The downturn of the pandemic economy has hit many groups hard. But for many millennials — those born between 1981 and 1996 — and Generation Z, who follow them, that pain — plus a number of other factors — are creating questions about who is responsible. Over the next few nights, economics correspondent Paul Solman is going to examine this. He begins tonight from the perspective of some millennials.

POLITICIANS were in charge. They were voted into office by single women and negroes. Men have always been conservative, as are married women.
You said *without much effort*, and while SOME may have done it that way, as in every generation, that was not the case for almost everyone I knew.
It took effort, buying what you could afford, fixing it up, budgeting your money. There was effort in home ownership then. It’s just that nobody whined and complained about it like they do today. It was just taken for granted.
They do, but it's not their parents fault.
It's the government.
Everyone was getting married and married young during the boomer years, which meant work, family, trying to buy a home, and also military service for 10 million of them, more of an expectation of having to put their nose to the grindstone for a career, to have nice things eventually.
Is that still going on with these current kids?
Are they single and looking to buy houses, and with too high of expectations for location and modernness and amenities and being able to change work frequently?
Buy a 3 bedroom bath Mobile home, that is the equivalent of my first house in 1985. The cost was 70K, interest was over 12pct, and I was making about $18K So my home cost me 4 times my wages. Today, people are making $40K working at Mcdonalds, and you can’t afford a home? When I worked fast food, I made $1.60 an hour.
The problem with housing is, over 50,000,000 non US born people in the country, add their kids and it is getting crowded. Inflation is more money, chasing a limited supply.
“Conservative” politicians have won plenty of elections in the last 30 or 40 years.
Then they do little or nothing. And almost never undo anything from the Left that they claimed to oppose (eg. Obamacare, but there are many others).
Contrast that with the new Leftist gov’t in Poland. Where they took power in December, and have already implemented much of the Globohomo Agenda in 5 months.
100% true, I am a mid boomer I am 69 now, my parents made me and my brother work around the house as kids. As teens it was you want money find a job. My brother did lawn mowing. Me I washed windows and babysat. All this crapping in boomers is stupid, also people forget the war babies born between 1942 and 1945
My first house was 900 sq ft — a 30 x 30 square. That INCLUDED a one-car garage, so living space was 750 sq feet and THREE bedrooms were crammed into that floor plan. That was the national average house size when it was built in the 40s. After five years there, we moved up to a 1,600 sq ft house with four bedrooms. and that did not include the attached garage. That was DOUBLE the national house size average when it was built in 1952. It has an attached two car garage. 40 amp electrical service. The kitchen had been remodeled in the 60s with 3/4 inch plywood carcase cabinets, probably made on-site, and just plywood doors with rounded edges.
I think it’s a matter of expectations and (as others said) a lot of it is driven by the TV shows showing glamorous homes. Expectations were modest in the 50s and people were thrilled to be in a new suburban house with 1,600 sq ft and a two car garage.
We bought it in ‘83 and have done a lot of upgrades and remodels, but it’s still the original 1952 floor plan which is very serviceable. Our three kids were raised here which helped them with modest expectations. In fact, our oldest daughter (who remodeled her house) loves the “mid century Eichler” style home! That’s what they bought and remodeled keeping the mid century design esthetic.
Raise kids with modest expectations and they won’t be unhappy. They’ll be ecstatic if they beat those modest expectations in their careers and home life.
And how many of the greatest generation go to college on the gi bill after the war, and got indoctrinated about Marxist ummm

Millenials are worse parents. They are afraid of even mentioning discipline to their children. Millenial teachers complain about millenial parents’ attitude and inability to train their children (late Gen Zs and Gen alphas) properly. Even the youngest children have absolutely no respect for any authority. The youngest kids cuss, hit and throw things at anyone — other kids, teachers, even the principal. I’m certain Dr. Spock saying don’t spank kids didn’t help any boomer or Gen X who listened to him, but it’s gone way beyond lack of spanking. These younger parents are scared to death of their own children.
Biden is a pre-boomer. Still, boomers Clinton, Bush II and Obama weren’t great.
The “Greatest Generation” had their problems too, at least when it came to politics and government. They were convinced that the good times were going to last forever and weren’t that great when things went splat. JFK, LBJ, RMN, Ford, Carter. Reagan was alright, but Bush Sr. set the pattern for boomers Bill and W and Barack.
Why is your gauge college? You know that boomers for the most part boomers were not able to afford college. They went into trades, or the military (Vietnam). College for civilians did not become really popular until Gen X/Y.
You mention that working and middle class compensation has been stagnant since the early 70’s. Who do you think starting working those years, suffered through gas queues and 20% mortgage/interest rates? You think it was so easy for boomers, but mention some of the very hardships we suffered through.
Funny how it is that Gen Ys and the Gen Zs support the very policies you mention caused their downfall. Boomers don’t want illegals here. They want China to pay and give our own citizens a chance.
College is not the cure all you seem to think it is. Today’s industry moves at a much faster pace than colleges or universities can manage to keep up with. Many students are insufficiently prepared to handle the work in industries required of them. That this fact has not yet reached the masses is probably their biggest downfall. These Generation XYZers shouldn’t have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for an education that won’t help them obtain work.
There needs to be a system that combines the latest in education with practical work in industry. I know people used to talk about such a system — a combination practical education and apprenticeship/trade program. One where people could work, especially in technology, and acquire hands on experience. But instead, they decided to go with hiring H1bs and the Millenials (gen ys) and gen Zs go right along with it because they think it’s “fair.”
I’m certain boomers would support your push for slashing the number of foreigners and reducing regulations, but the ones most helped by those policies would have problems voting for them.

I agree with you. They don’t seem to understand that they need to be patient. Each generation had bad things happen to them. They had to survive the bad times and make the best of the good times.
These kids today think there should only be good times, ignore the bad times others had to suffer, and just complain about where ever they find themselves. Are things right now difficult for them? Yes. Are they being taken advantage and sold a bill of goods? Yes. Will things stay this way forever? No. Things could get better or they could get much worse for everyone.
These kids today have no foundation, we boomers did and still do — God. That is the biggest difference I see today.

Except, they don't vote that way. Reagan and crew passed amnesty in 86, and we got 6 other amnesties for illegals led by neoliberal boomers like Newt Gingrich. It was boomers who pimped and pushed nafta, most favored trade for communist china, and other wto free trade 'deals'. But the idea that 'boomers' held the line on globalism and nationalism here simply isn't true. The entire point of the 90's was boomers like Newt and Limbaugh working to destroy any idea of third parties, nationalism and populism here in America.
