Harsh old woman to man taking food order in Flower Drum Song:
Madame ‘Auntie’ Liang:
“Then sell me five pounds of seahorses, two pounds of dried snake meat, and a box of longevity noodles. Oh, yes, and a dozen thousand-year eggs. And be sure they’re fresh.”
“Flower Drum Song” is a great book. The author was authentically Chinese, and wrote, in superb English, with a genuine Chinese “voice”.
Unlike other later “Chinese-American” authors he was no resentful whiner either.
He could make his people funny, as above.
Of course, no-one wants that book in US high schools.
