Israeli aircraft radioed in that the ship was identified as being American and were ordered to attack regardless. Both distress frequencies and tactical frequencies were jammed.

The radio tech on the Liberty was able to connect a coaxial cable to an undamaged antenna and got a message out stating that the ship was under attack from unidentified jet aircraft and requested immediate assistance. The Israelis intercepted this message and only then broke off the attack. Those torpedo boats were there to finish the job.

Your timeline is incorrect. An Israeli ISR aircraft labeled it as American. This was not properly recorded at HQ, something that would not have occured if there had been an American naval liaison. Hours later, another aircraft found USS Liberty and reported it as Egyptian spy ship coordinating nearby Egyptian forces. There was an egyptian trawler in the area. The Israeli HQ marked the Liberty as egyptian and then redirected a flight of aircraft from a land strike and infantry support to take it out.
