Researchers have developed a new coin-type sodium-based battery that can charge rapidly “in seconds” and could potentially power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles (EVs) in the future.Engineers have had this battery about 5 years now and it works as advertised, .... however, they can't make it in sizes much larger than a quarter. The largest auto that you could power it with is the size of a Hot Wheels.

They are either full of crap or it’s very dangerous. Transfer of enough energy to power anything of any size for very long is going to take a lot longer than “seconds”, if the transfer is stable.

Great, but how do you extinguish them when they catch on fire?
Elemental sodium, like phosphorous, doesn’t play well with water, IIRC.

Still doesn’t answer the question of where the power is going to come from. Regardless of how fast it charges, the amount of power remains the same and in fact faster charging would put even more of a strain

Could be. Sodium batteries will power portable electronic devices very efficiently.

But sodium is heavier so is this really appropriate for mobile applications?

Charging a vehicle which is twice as expensive, and twice as heavy, is not feasible, no matter how quickly it is accomplished.
Of course, there’s still the fire danger, but Big Brother doesn’t care.

Sizzlers! Remember those? Tesla Model Ss look suspiciously like what I remember a Sizzler car looking like.

That is what I was thinking, essentially they will be creating bombs.

Actually, I have forgotten Sizzler toy cars completely, so I checked, and yes, I believe you are correct.
It might be this one:

“Could” is meaningless in the real world.

These guys think you could re-charge an electric vehicle in seconds? Heck, let’s give them 5 minutes. Now calculate the size of the power infrastructure needed to deliver that much energy in 5 minutes. Now let’s visualize putting it every place there is now a conventional gas station.
Hahahahahaha!
To: Red Badger
Nope. Still not buying one.
Since everything they replace something bad with turns out to be even worse, no way am I taking any chances.

What’s the big deal? Current EVs recharge in seconds, already. 15000 to 16000 or so, but seconds are seconds… 🙄
