Quite an evil regime even by Communist standards.
Perhaps the worst?
Does anyone have any memories or know anything about it during that period in the 70s?

"even by Communist standards."
Which are pretty low. According to the Black Book of Communism, they murdered about 2 million, or a quarter of the population. All herded into reeducation camps and their skulls stacked into neat piles on display as a warning to those to don't go with the program. The Soviets probably murdered about a quarter of their population as well. And the Red Chinese take the record for 65 million, including gardeners because Mao thought that gardening was somehow uncommunistic.

As a little kid, I vaguely remember seeing on the news reports about the Khmer Rouge taking control of Phnom Penh and, later, Vietnam invading the country. I remember someone half-joking that even the Vietnamese Communists thought the Cambodian Communists were too crazy and intervened to straighten them out.

"And the Red Chinese take the record for 65 million, including gardeners because Mao thought that gardening was somehow uncommunistic." The Khmer Rouge killed people who wore glasses. Can't have "intellectuals" running around.

*** the Khmer Rouge, took control of Cambodia on April 17, 1975.***
I remember California University students having a candle light parade celebrating the fall of South Vietnam and the take over of Cambodia.

Vietnam was more in the Soviet camp, whereas the Khmer Rouge was supported by China.
Even Ho Chi Minh remarked that he would rather smell French s___ for five years, than Chinese s___ for a thousand years.
And also in 1979, there was a brief border skirmish between Vietnam and China.

I remember California University students having a candle light parade celebrating the fall of South Vietnam and the take over of Cambodia. History sure does rhyme.

When one is making estimates in the millions, it’s hard to be exact. We will never know for sure. But yet more millions murdered in the name of communism.

At some point it becomes impossible to know exactly.
But we do know they killed a majority of their population. Which was unprecedented.

A majority, no.
Estimates are around 20% of the population. I have been there, Cambodians are decent people. At the killing fields site there is this huge glass cabinet full of skulls. The entire area, the soil is sort of grey, with bone dust I presume.

Keep in mind this didn’t occur in a vacuum. Where did all this crap nonsense come from?
Pol Pot was “educated” at the finest French universities.
That’s where he was indoctrinated into Marxist/Communist philosophy. Academics.
To: RandFan
I’ve read stories that the Khmer Rouge killed people for having glasses, thinking that they were intellectuals, rather than just someone who couldn’t see well without help.

Pol Pot was “educated” at the finest French universities. Another reason I assert that had we allowed Germany to defeat France and Russia during WWI, the world would have been a better place.
