“I grew up less than a block from the elementary school. I used to walk home for lunch - we had all day Kindergarten in those days? Mom would be rockin’ grilled cheese sammiches and tomato soup ready to go.”
When I was in kindergarten it was still half a day. When they made it full day I voiced my opinion on that and was dead set against it. Kids at 5 years old are still too young to go a full day. These kids are getting burned out on school by third grade.
I heard tales of kids going home for lunch but when I was in school I don’t recall any children doing this. We either ate school lunch or what our moms sent us in those metal lunch boxes. Usually PB%J, an apple or carrots and soup in the thermos and we bought milk from the school. I noticed that today’s lunchboxes for kids don’t even come with a thermos.
I’m not even sure today’s schools would let kids go home form lunch if they lived near the school. Today’s school are on lock down like a prison.
My kids came home for lunch in high school (we homeschooled through 10th grade abd then the girls wanted to do proms and be cheerleaders) or I brought them a hot lunch. I would bring them cheese and avocado quesadillas with salsa in an insulated carrier. Tradwifing before it was cool, about 10 years ago.
This actually attracted a lot of male attention because pretty girls with pretty food...
